Spirit and athleticism celebrated as Maastricht hosts the Royals Cup

Last weekend the Royals Cup took place in Maastricht for the first time. The event, organised by a student team in cooperation with the School of Business and Economics (SBE) and the local community, brought together students from different countries to compete in various disciplines. The Netherlands, Germany and Morocco were represented by student teams from different universities.

The first games of hockey, football, basketball, volleyball and handball began on Friday with all teams competing fiercely. As main sponsor KPMG Luxembourg invited SBE students to compete together with some of their recruiters in volleyball and football. Some students also had the opportunity to meet KPMG Luxembourg during a speed dating session.

Next to enjoying the sports students also got the chance to attend a company fair before the day concluded in the “Stadspark” with a relay race. After dinner all participants celebrated their victories of the day at the Muziekgieterij.

Saturday was finals day with RWTH Aachen University winning Handball, the IUBH – School of Business and Management dominating female Football, the Groupe HEM Officiel winning male Football and Maastricht University winning the relay race, volleyball, hockey and basketball.

Before crowning the winners however, the Maastricht University cheerleading team gave an exclusive performance to the audience.

After the cheerleading performance all winners of the sports events received their trophies and the Spirit Champions of the Royals Cup were finally announced: EMBA – European Media & Business Academy showed the best spirit throughout the weekend.

The Royals Cup concluded after dinner when all participants enjoyed the nightlife of Maastricht one more time at the Royals Cup closing party sponsored by Tinder.
