The number of international knowledge workers in Limburg has increased seven-fold since 2007, with the city now boasting more than 2,500 foreign labourers. During this period, the number of economically active foreigners grew to 13,209. Maastricht is the most popular Limburg city for this community to live and work in. This according to research commissioned by the Holland Expat Center South, a South Netherlands collaboration between 35 municipalities , the provinces of North Brabant and Limburg, Brainport Development, Limburg Economic Development Brainport 2020 and the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service.
According to the study, which also tracked the international student population, Maastricht University has the most international students. In the 2011/12 academic year, 6,553 international students were enrolled in academic programmes at UM, which is 45% of the total student body.

The number of international knowledge workers is expected to increase in the coming years, due in part to initiatives by the Limburg Knowledge Axis, a ten-year strategic programme by knowledge partners UM, MUMC+ and Hogeschool Zuyd.
