A total of 422 bachelor’s students and 439 master’s students received their degrees at the Maastricht University School of Business and Economics graduation ceremonies on 15, 16 and 17 November 2013.
The four bachelor’s ceremonies were hosted by Lieven Quintens. Huub Meijers and Ad van Iterson hosted the five sessions for the master’s students.
Just like last year students were invited to elect their most inspiring staff member to give a speech during the ceremony. The master’s students opted for five different guest speakers: Simon Beausaert, Gaby Odekerken-Schröder, Lisa Brüggen, Piet Eichholtz and Dennis Bams and an overwhelming majority of bachelor’s students chose Christian Kerckhoffs to be their guest speaker. During his speech, Christian questioned the fact of his presence on a student’s Facebook page projecting him as an inspiring person right next to Tupac Shakur and Malcolm X. His words raised a lot of laughter amongst the 500 people present in the Lecture Hall.
Students were asked to wear the traditional black caps and gowns. On their caps they wore a tassel in the colour corresponding to their degree: orange for the bachelor’s and light blue for the master’s. Students who graduated cum laude also received an honoree scarf next to their diploma.
At the end of the ceremony the proud graduates moved the tassel from right to left and celebrated their achievement by tossing their caps into the air.
