UM alumnus new Chief Economist at the European Patent Office

UM alumnus Dr Theon van Dijk has been named Chief Economist at the European Patent Office, where he will focus on economic growth, innovation and patents.

He obtained his Doctorate in Economics at UM research institute MERIT in 1994, under the supervision of Luc Soete and Patrick Van Cayseele, with the research title: ‘The Limits of Patent Protection. Essays on the Economics of Intellectual Property Rights’.

After leaving Maastricht, van Dijk held a postdoc at the Institut d’Économie Industrielle in Toulouse and senior positions at international consultancies in London and Brussels.
