You are warmly invited to the opening of the academic year 2013/14 on Monday 2 September 2013. The theme of the event is ‘Science for society in the Europe of regions’.
How can research, knowledge and innovation drive economic growth in Europe? During the ceremony this question will be raised from the perspective not just of Europe as a whole, but also of each of its regions. As an example, the collaboration in Limburg between governmental authorities, the business sector and knowledge institutions will be discussed.
The opening of the academic year will be held in the Theater aan het Vrijthof. The guest of honour is Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, the European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, whose policy solutions to the economic crisis in Europe revolve around the development of research, knowledge and innovation. Also on the programme is the presentation of the Student Prize and the Edmond Hustinx Prize for Science. Singer/songwriter Marike Jager provides the musical accompaniment of the programme. As a graduate of our university she started her musical career in Maastricht.
The official opening will start at 15.30; please take your seats in the hall by 15.15. The programme will end at 17.00, followed by a reception in the foyer of the theatre.
We look forward to welcoming you!
