A team of four SBE students – Ulrike Hahn, Ulrike Thürheimer, Sophie Florian and Philipp Loick – coached by Bas van Diepen reached the finals in the Citi International Case Competition 2012 held in Hong Kong on 28 October – 2 November.
The case consisted in advising the famous Hong Kong entrepreneur Ricky Wong (Chairman of City Telecom Ltd.) to achieve the goal he has expressed of revolutionizing the HK free-to-air TV market.
The SBE team rolled out a complete business model by addressing both the B2C and B2B for the judges in their division (who included representatives from the University of California Berkeley, Thammasat University, Tsinghua University, Ritsumeikan University and Concordia University) and managed getting to the finals.
In the finals, the SBE team became the first runner-up behind HKUST and before Ivey School of Business and the University of British Columbia.
Both team and coach said they were extremely proud with the congratulations by the company’s chairman who revealed that their recommendations (B2B and B2C) matched 80 percent of what the company has decided to do.
Team member Philipp Loick enjoyed the experience: “The week in Hong Kong was amazing and definitely a highlight of my student career. Next to the experience of Hong Kong, the week showed me how stressful teamwork can be, particularly hour-long discussions, but also how rewarding. Being able to assert ourselves against the top business schools around the world and making it to the second place was overwhelming, especially when the CEO personally congratulated us for the solution.”
We congratulate our SBE team with this very good accomplishment and with another great learning experience.
