On Saturday, 28 May, UM celebrated its 35th anniversary together with the alumni. The Alumni Day was a fun-filled reunion. The programme for the day consisted of two parts.
During the morning programme, alumni visited their own faculty. SBE graduates teamed up in a continuous learning experience that centred around the theme “Sharing Success”, that best underlies the School’s core values. “Our idea was to welcome our graduates back to Maastricht and share our academic research and education initiatives”, stated SBE Alumni Officer Leann Poeth. “It was a true sharing success experience”.
Alumni had the opportunity to attend several mini-workshops organised by SBE’s research institutes, Service Science Factory (SSF), Network Social Innovation (NSI), and Maastricht Centre for Entrepreneurship (MC4E). Also, alumni could get hands-on experience and advice about the investment portfolio of SIGMA Investments, the study association for students with an interest in portfolio management and financial markets. To step into the world of entrepreneurs, graduates could then follow the company “pitches” from SBE’s master’s students enrolled in the Entrepreneurship programme, as part of which students are obliged to begin their own new venture. This was enhanced by several alumni who have become entrepreneurs as a result of this programme.
Where do SBE graduates end up after they leave Maastricht? What sectors do they work in? How do they compare to other university graduates? Questions like these were addressed during the opening speech by Dr Christoph Meng, alumnus Economics (1998), PhD (2006), who is now working for the Research Centre for Education and the Labour Market (ROA) at Maastricht University.
The Mensa was transformed into a game playing area for an interactive network lunch that was organised by study associations FS FOCUS, 3MA, EFM Academy, Integrand and UniPartners. The activities included: Wii, Roulette, Milk the Cow, and chocolate tasting.
Meet & greet in the garden
In the afternoon, the garden of TS53 was transformed into an alumni paradise. Gerdo van Grootheest, alderman of the city of Maastricht and SBE alumnus IB 2002, opened the festivities.
Music filled the air when alumni were serenaded by Tuna Universitaria de Maastricht, a group of UM students and alumni troubadours. The Coronas, with their music pool of more than 5000 songs, had the alumni dancing!
The four main student associations (MSV Tragos, SV Circumflex, SV Koko and MRSV Saurus) hosted “meet & greet” sessions with their alumni and student members.
The festival closed by saying goodbye to Ine Kuppen, founder of the UM alumni office, who will retire this month. “It’s time to sit back and watch the flowers grow”.
The SBE Alumni Homecoming Day is an ANNUAL event. We hope that you will join us in June 2012 (date to be announced).
