This week I’m visiting Silicon Valley, organising a small conference on the art and science of services. The event will be held at IBM’s Almaden Research Center in San Jose. I recently had a talk with one of the professors at San Jose State University and he proudly showed off what he felt to be the next level in university teaching. He’d created a lab with six cubicles for eight students. These groups were self-managing, supported by high-end computer facilities and addressed topics such as theory and innovation in services. Both the students and staff were very satisfied with this learning format.
Problem-based learning? I’m confident that we’re right on track with our small-group teaching approach. Let’s define the next level ourselves, and stay “leading in learning”.
Have a great summer.
