Every year, Ghent University awards Honorary Doctorates to people who, usually in cooperation with the university, have demonstrated creditable achievements in academic education, scientific research and public or scientific services.
The Faculty of Economics and Business Administration of Ghent University decided on 7 January to award Professor Luc Soete an Honorary Doctorate. Soete is Full Professor of International Economic Affairs at SBE, and director of UNU-MERIT, and former student at Ghent University, where he obtained his first degrees in Economics and Development Economics in 1972.
Soete is one of the founders of the scientific research into the nature, origin, determinants and social consequences of innovation, well before this was seen as crucial to economic development. It will come as no surprise that his work receives global recognition.
This Honorary Doctorate is third in a line of (inter)national awards; in 2002, Professor Soete was awarded the MSM Honorary Fellow Award, and in 2006 he was awarded Commander in the Order of the Crown, a national decoration of Belgium.
